As Kiwis living in Oz there’s heaps of things on our mind. Here’s our top 10….what‘s on your list?
1. “Will we get a fair deal on Aussie citizenship?”
This one’s been kicking around for more than 10 years! Good to see it gets plenty of coverage and we’re all making noise about it!
The NZ and Oz Prime Ministers don’t seem too interested in changing things. Let’s hope a fair deal isn’t too far away.
2. “I want to move back to NZ, but…….
…..will I earn enough money back home and have the same opportunities?”
Let’s face it, we all love Aotearoa, but higher pay in Oz is the number 1 reason for being here.
Here’s one for you to ponder: will the NZ lifestyle and kiwi culture ever be more attractive than money?
3. “Shall I say ch-an-ce, or stick with char-nce”
As kiwis living in Oz, we’ve gotta expect a ribbing about our kiwi accent. Do you avoid the jokes by putting on an Aussie accent….do you pronounce “6” like they do to avoid the jokes?
4. “Should I go home to NZ for Christmas this year?”
We all want to go home for Xmas, but those bloody airlines hike the prices too much aye! Cheeky buggers offer cheap-as flights when no-one has time to go!
Go on, book that flight! Can you put a price on being around the whanau and wearing jandals around the pohutukawa tree on 25 December?
5. “I wish all my friends and family could be with me in Oz”
Australia has it all – the money, the weather, the work, the beaches…..but if only my friends and family came over as well.
How many times have you told them to come over? I’ve lost count!
6. “The ABs better not lose to the Wallabies on Saturday!”
There’s nothing worse for a Kiwi living in Oz than going to work on Monday morning after the Wallabies have beaten the AB’s on Saturday. Oh well, at least it hasn’t happened much since we took back the Bledisloe in 2003.
7. “Will Richie be there in 2015?”
For all Kiwis, no matter where we’re living, this is the question we’re all debating. Looks like the great man is doing everything he can to be there. But will his ageing body last, or will someone better take his place?
8. “Where can I get a pack of pineapple lumps?!”
Seeing NZ snack food in Oz pulls at the heartstrings. We all seem to lose our minds when we find out where we can get our hands on pineapple lumps, L&P, mallowpuffs…..
Did you honestly go that crazy when you ate those things before you left NZ?
9. “Do we claim Russell Crowe as a kiwi or not?”
Poor old Rusty can’t even get Aussie citizenship because of the Feb 2001 rules (see point no. 1 above). Claiming Russell Crowe as a kiwi just go easier……he has a NZ passport and can’t get Aussie citizenship.
But…..do you want to claim him as a kiwi?
10. “Do I support the Poms or the Aussies?”
Does the famous slogan “I support NZ and anyone playing Australia” hold true with you?
As kiwis, the trans-Tasman rivalry means we naturally like to see the Aussies go down. But we live in their country, should we be in their corner when they play the Poms?
Who did you go for in the Lions v Wallabies series?
……………………………..
What else is on your mind as a Kiwi living in Oz that we’ve missed?
